The Kornati National Park, also known as the ‘stone pearl’ of the Adriatic Sea, is a collection of 89 islands, islets and rocks. It is located on the south side of Dugi otok, and extends along the Zadar and Šibenik archipelago. The Kornati islands are characterised by an impressive rocky landscape with its rare vegetation, which gives this archipelago a magical, timeless atmosphere. According to legend, Kornati originated when God created the world, and from the remains of pebbles that he left behind and threw over his shoulders, the most beautiful islands of the Adriatic were created. On Kornati you can also find its characteristic dry stone walls, unique examples of traditional stone construction created without using any mortar which, to this day, serve as a natural barrier or border between pasture and arable land. Kornati is an ideal place for divers and sailors, and can be explored on one of the numerous day trips available at Zadar to Biograd na Moru, Dugi otok and other locations.
