Opposite the island of Pag is the Velebit mountain range which stretches 145 km along the Adriatic coast and it is also the longest mountain in Croatia. In elevation Velebit is the fourth highest mountain in Croatia, and features the highest peak, called Vaganski vrh, which is 1757 metres high. The Velebit mountain range is a protected area and has been declared a nature park which actually comprises two national parks, Northern Velebit and Paklenica. Velebit abounds in its widely diverse flora and fauna, the most prominent of which is an endemic species called Velebit degenia, which can also be seen on Croatian coins. Velebit is the natural habitat of the golden eagle and various species of owls. The specific geomorphological properties of this mountain favoured the development of various cave systems, such as the Cerovačka cave and the paleontological rich cave of Velnačka Glavica. Besides its untouched nature, beautiful landscape and interesting flora and fauna, Velebit is also known for its numerous legends and represents an important aspect of traditional folk and cultural heritage. For example, the first Croatian novel Planine, written in the 16th century by the Croatian writer Petar Zoranić, talks about Velebit.
